This is an out and back fire road in the front range of the San Gabriels. The peak is bristling with various communications equipment, but it also offers some panaromic views of the San Gabriel valley, San Fernando valley, San Gabriel mountains, and sometimes as far as the ocean. The fire road is generally kept in good order, in part probably for service vehicles to reach the summit.

Getting there

From Highway 2 proceed to the first Angeles Forest Fire Station on the left, ~3.5 miles from the 210 freeway exit in La Canada Flintridge. Water can sometimes be found at the start (look for a hose near the water fountain), but no restrooms. Note an adventure pass is required for parking in this area. Google directions to start

The Ride

Directions for this ride are simple. Begin by passing between the fire station building on the right and some small residences on the left, to the start of fire road 2N76A. Pass around the gate at 0.09 miles and begin the steady climb. On relatively clear days you should see downtown LA at 1.8 miles, along with La Canada, the 210 freeway, Verdugo’s and Griffith park.

There are not many turn-offs on this road. The first is on the left at 2.35 miles, to the Lukens Connection Trail and some beehives. At 2.54 miles you may get a view of the summit to the left - look for a cluster of antennae on the furthest peak.

A water tower appears ahead at 3.29 miles, and is reached at 3.69 miles. This is conveniently situated at the half way point, so makes a good resting place if a break is needed. On the left is 2N81 - used for the Earl Canyon ride.

Continuing on 2N76, the next junction is reached at 4.25 miles and is used by the Grizzly Flat ride. Beyond here, at 5.69 miles you will once again catch site of the summit, straight ahead; further away than you might think. The Big Tujunga road and reservoir may be seen on the right at 6.12 miles, and once again the summit will be seen at 6.42 miles after a switch-back to the right.

Finally after about an hour and half of riding bear left at 7.27 miles to pass between the communications towers, continuing across the levelled area to reach the end at 7.38 miles and elevation of 5050’.

The return is a reverse of the climb, although at 10.5 miles you could turn left and follow the directions down from the Grizzly Flat Ride - this road is not as well maintained, but is shaded and generally prettier. A little climbing is needed if returning this way, and the final stretch is downhill on Highway 2 (fun if you like going fast, but not if you don’t like sharing the road with other fast traffic).
